Inference questions on the GMAT ask you to identify a conclusion that must be true based solely on the information provided. They test your ability to read carefully and draw logical conclusions without adding outside knowledge.

An inference on the GMAT is a statement that logically follows from the facts or premises given in a passage or argument. Unlike assumptions (which are unstated and necessary for the argument to work), an inference is a conclusion that is guaranteed to be true if the given information is true. You are not asked to guess or speculate; you are asked to find what must follow.
Why It Matters on the GMAT
Inference questions appear in both the Verbal and Integrated Reasoning sections. They test your ability to read precisely and reason rigorously. A common trap is choosing an answer that seems reasonable or is likely true in the real world, but is not guaranteed by the passage. The correct answer is always the one that is 100% supported by the text.
A Concrete Example
Passage: "All GMAT test-takers who score above 700 have studied at least 100 hours. Maria scored above 700 on the GMAT."
Possible inference: "Maria studied at least 100 hours." This must be true because the passage states a universal condition and Maria meets that condition.
Non-inference: "Maria studied exactly 150 hours." This is not supported; we only know she studied at least 100.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing an answer that is merely plausible or consistent with the passage, but not necessarily true.
- Bringing in outside knowledge or real-world assumptions.
- Confusing inference with assumption: an assumption is an unstated premise, while an inference is a conclusion drawn from stated premises.
- Overlooking quantifiers like 'all', 'some', 'none'—these change what must be true.
How to Practice It
When practicing, read the passage and then ask: "What must be true if this passage is true?" For each answer choice, test whether the opposite could be true while still keeping the passage facts intact. If the opposite is possible, that choice is not a valid inference.
