Tricky little one. I converted 0.089 to 89/1000 and 0.03 to 3/100, then rewrote the whole thing as a single square root. Took me a second to see it but once the numbers cancel it's clean.
Exactly what I did. The fraction inside the root simplifies nicely if you flip the 0.03.
Wait, can you flip it like that? I always mess up the algebra when there's a root over a decimal.
Got 10 on my first try but I'm honestly not sure why. Is it because 0.09 is basically 0.089 and the root of 0.09 is 0.3, and 0.3/0.03 is 10?
Yeah that approximation works well here since the choices are so spread out. Just don't rely on that if the answers were close together.
This is a 700-level question? Felt more like 650 to me but the decimals tricked me at first. Respect to anyone who nailed it under 90 seconds.
Nice one. I like that they force you to deal with the sqrt and the decimal at the same time. Good practice for estimation.
Agreed, estimation is such an underrated skill on these. Saved me more than once.
What it tests
Your fluency with the order of operations, fractions, decimals, and basic number sense — the foundation every quant question leans on.
Common trap
Applying the order of operations out of sequence or rounding intermediate values before the final step.
